Camping Beneath the Stars in the Snowy Mountains

Camping Beneath the Stars in the Snowy Mountains

📍 Snowy Mountains, NSW | 🏕️ Wild Camping & Unexpected Encounters | 🔥 Solo Adventure

It had been years since I slept outside with nothing but the stars above me.

I had planned a two-day camping trip near Dead Horse Gap, just off the Kosciuszko Main Range. It was supposed to be an easy escape into nature, but nature had its own way of reminding me who was in charge.

A Campfire & Curious Visitors

By sunset, my tent was up, my campfire flickering, and the entire valley glowed in golden light.

I stretched out by the fire, sipping tea, watching the last traces of sunlight disappear behind the ridgeline.

And then—I heard it.

A rustling. Then snapping twigs.

I froze.

Slowly, I turned my headlamp toward the trees. Two shining eyes stared back at me.

A brumby, standing just meters away, watching me with the same curiosity I had for it.

For a second, we just stared at each other—two creatures, both out of place, but completely at home in the wilderness.

Then, just as silently as it appeared, the wild horse turned and disappeared into the night.

And suddenly, I wasn’t alone anymore.

Tips for Camping in the Snowy Mountains

✔️ Check for brumbies—Wild horses are common, but store your food securely so they don’t wander into your camp.
✔️ Prepare for cold nights—Even in summer, temperatures drop below freezing at higher altitudes. A warm sleeping bag is essential.
✔️ Be fire-safe—Check for fire restrictions before lighting a campfire.
✔️ Bring a backup light—Your headlamp will die at the worst possible moment. Always pack a second one.
✔️ Slow down—Camping here isn’t about conquering peaks—it’s about soaking in the stillness.
